QK SMTP Server - General FAQ
|
SMTP |
Simple Mail Transfer Protocol(SMTP), a protocol for sending e-mail messages
between servers.
SMTP is generally used to send messages from a mail client to a mail server. |
|
Mail Client |
Mail Client is an application that runs on a personal computer or workstation
and enables you to send, receive and organize e-mail. Mail is sent from many clients
to a mail server, then sentl to its intended destination via mail server. |
|
Mail Server |
A computer or device on a network that manages network mail resources. |
|
Port |
An interface on a computer to which you can connect a device. Personal computers
have various types of ports. Internally, there are several ports for connecting
disk drives, display screens, and keyboards. Externally, personal computers have
ports for connecting modems, printers, mice, and other peripheral devices. Almost
all personal computers come with a serial RS-232C port or RS-422 port for connecting
a modem or mouse and a parallel port for connecting a printer. On PCs, the parallel
port is a Centronics interface that uses a 25-pin connector. SCSI (Small Computer
System Interface) ports support higher transmission speeds than do conventional
ports and enable you to attach up to seven devices to the same port. |
|
SMTP Relay |
SMTP Relay is a service provided by most modern SMTP Servers. Whenever you
send email to someone that is not on the same network as you are, somebody will
need to deliver that email. |
|
DNS Server |
Short for Domain Name System (or Service), an Internet service that translates
domain names into IP addresses. Because domain names are alphabetic, they're easier
to remember. The Internet however, is really based on IP addresses. Every time
you use a domain name, therefore, a DNS service must translate the name into the
corresponding IP address. For example, the domain name www.example.com might translate
to 198.105.232.4. The DNS system is, in fact, its own network. If one DNS server
doesn't know how to translate a particular domain name, it asks another one, and
so on, until the correct IP address is returned. |
|
ISP |
Internet Service Provider(ISP), a company that provides access to the Internet.
The service provider offers you a software package, username, password and access
phone number with stated fee.
You can log on to the Internet via a modem, then browse the World Wide Web, send
and receive e-mail. |
|
E-mail |
Electronic Mail(e-mail/email), the transmission of messages over communications
networks.
Generally you can edit your messages and send the message to the recipient with
recipient's specific address.
Sent messages are stored in electronic mailboxes until the recipient fetches them. |
|
Mail Box |
An area in memory or on a storage device where e-mail is placed.
In e-mail systems, each user has a private mailbox. When the user receives e-mail,
the mail system automatically puts it in the mailbox. |
|
Mail Bounce |
A bounced e-mail is one that never arrives in the recipient's inbox and is
sent back, or bounced back, to the sender with an error message that indicates
to the sender that the e-mail was never successfully transmitted. |
